Expert tasks professional bodies on national development

Professional bodies in Nigeria have been  charged on the need to to come up with strategies that will enhance their relevance in  national development.

Professor Effiong Johnson of the University of Uyo, made the charge, in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State,   recently, at a Presidential Retreat organized by the Association of Professional Bodies of Nigeria (APBN).

The university don also stressed the need for professional bodies under the APBN to devise plans that will enable government at all levels engage them as dependable partners..


Professor Johnson, who was speaking on the theme, “Strategies for APBN Inclusion in National Development Plan”, listed capacity development, engagement of key political actors, lobbying, community development, constructive discourses on developmental issues as some of the strategies the APBN must use in gaining visibility, relevance and acceptability in matters of national development.

“One of the strategies APBN can use to gain access to national development is to have unity amongst the professional bodies to enable you have a consolidated voice and recognition,” the don argued.

In his welcome address, the association’s president, Surveyor Akinloye Oyegbola explained that a key reason for the annual  retreat was to provide a conducive environment to the Council and Board Members of the Association to work together along with other representatives of Member-bodies, with a view to reviewing its affairs in the past year and consolidate or refocus it as the case may be.
