Rotary Club of Lagos has announced a donation of 340 rain-boots to children in Oko-Agbon community,  in Makoko area of the state.

 

Making the donation recently to the children of the riverine community, the President of Rotary Club of Lagos,  Rotarian Joseph Akhigbe, explained that the gesture, which was done in partnership with the club’s sister body in Kenya, Rotary Club of  Karen, Nairobi,  was borne out of the need to prevent the community’s children from contacting water-related diseases.

 

According to him, the intervention had become imperative since the children in the community, constituting a hugely vulnerable group, usually move around the riverine community, especially in the waters, barefooted, thereby exposing themselves to a lot of danger.

 

He added that the club had earlier provided life jackets to the people in the community, in partnership with its sister club, from Kenya.

 

“It was during that visit that we noticed that the children moved around barefooted, and our sister club insisted on intervening, by contributing the funds, with which the items are being provided,” he added.

 

Akhigbe reiterated the club’s commitment to bringing smiles to the faces of the people in its operating environments, especially the downtrodden.

 

He added that the club had also made adequate arrangements towards ensuring that the items were put to good use, by raising some corp members, assigned with the task of ensuring usage.

 

“Rotary Club of Karen, Nairobi and Rotary Club of Lagos are here to make donation of 340 rain-boots here in Oko-Agbon.

 

“It is a riverine community. It is not good for these children to be going into the water with barefoot. They can get disease, injured and  even death.

 

“So, we are intervening in that area to help them improve on their living conditions,” stated the Lagos Rotary President, representing the two donors.
