The Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) has, again, expressed grave concerns over some spurious advertisement contents being exposed on the social media, blaming some brand owners of taking advantage of the ‘loose opportunities’ offered by online platforms to make such unethical claims.
The Council, in a statement issued on Wednesday by its Director General, Dr. Lekan Fadolapo, expressed displeasure at the unlawful exposure of the series of unethical advertisements on treatment of a range of ailments on Instagam and Facebook platforms, owned by Meta incorporated, represented in Nigeria by Facebook Nigeria Operations Limited.
It described the claims in the 22 listed advertisements, as posing serious health risks to Nigerians; since they had no clinical or scientific proof of their efficacies.
The agency added that investigations conducted by the agency had revealed that the products being advertised were never certified by relevant regulatory authorities, and that those brand owners were only taking advantage of the ‘loose opportunities’ offered by online media platforms, to expose the ‘unvetted’ materials.
It, however, vowed to go after individuals and organizations, involved in the unlawful exposure of the ‘unapproved advertisements’ and sanction them in line with the nation’s Code of Advertising.
